The Aerie Lamp

The objective was to design a product that invokes a particular kind of emotion from the user.

The process involved a lot of introspection, looking into what emotional response means and what is the emotion that I would like to generate from the user through the product.

The result was The Aerie Lamp. The Lamp comes in two parts : a base that is made of clay, and a top that is made of fabric. The form of the lamp mimics a bird’s nest with an egg; with the base nest-like structure reflecting a feeling of fragility and uncertainty while the top spherical structure giving a sense of comfort, and joy.

The emotional response of the product comes from it’s usage. How a lamp that ideally seems like a decoration and is not portable has a portable ‘part’ that the user can carry around with them. The difference in structure, shape, material makes it additionally inviting for the user to carry out different sets of actions with the help of the product. The multifunctional nature of the product is also what generates this specific emotion of content in the user.
